‘eBay’ is in no doubt by far the most outstanding place to bid on new and used PCs, gadgets, and electronic components. It is also one of the best places to auction off your older equipment and make some money to fund your new purchases. But some critics of the online auction house argue that it has become too large for its own good. Luckily, alternatives are out there in the marketplace.

One of the biggest complaints about eBay is that its seller fees are continually increasing. At this writing, its fees were $1 for every item listed at $50 to $200 and $2 for every item over $200. Although these listing fees might seem small, they add up if you are selling multiple items.

For buyers, since the marketplace is so huge, scoring a genuine deal is tough. So many products are listed that finding just what you’re looking for can be overwhelming.

Also, eBay’s user feedback system is weak: The website allows users to place only 80 characters of feedback for a seller. That’s not nearly enough room for a disappointed client to speak out about how they either didn’t receive the product, that is was late or why the product didn’t meet expectations.

The Trade-Off: Slower Traffic

These days a common goal is diversification in selling. Business owners are seeking more places where they can widen their market opportunities at a low cost.

Fortunately, alternative auction sites address some of the problems, but be aware of trade-offs when going the non-eBay route. The big one is that traffic is a lot slower: Less people will see your items, and marketing something could take weeks.

eCrater provides free tools to help you construct your own Web store. It has no listing fees, and you can easily import your eBay products into your storefront. All wares are monitored by Google’s Product Search Marketplace, which provides up-to-date facts about your offerings to possible buyers.

What is eCrater?

eCrater began on September 28, 2004 in California. It began as an idea that Dimitri Slavov had of a market with no costs. This was a revolutionary concept in 2004. He really visualized an easy to navigate site with no costs to sellers as being an ideal nonetheless attainable marketplace. His vision succeeded since as of February 2010, there were three million items listed on eCRATER.

‘eCrater’ is a market place just like ‘ebay’, or ‘i-offer’, or ‘craigslist’. ‘eCrater’ is somewhere between ‘craigslist’ and ‘eBay’ in that its a more open system, but it also goes further than ‘craigslist’ to provide buyers and traders with support systems.

You, as the consumer, still have to do your homework and check the seller rep, just as you do on eBay. If you use Google Checkout, or Paypal for all your proceedings you will have no issues if the seller doesn’t follow through, the payment scheme deals with you and refunds immediately if the seller doesn’t respond, or doesn’t follow through with the sale.

On the other hand, as a seller, if you accept Google Checkout, they have protection services that actually protect you.

With eCrater you can grow your web store for free as well as join a prosperous, free on-line marketplace. When sellers sign up with eCrater they get fully customizable online stores that lodge an unrestricted amount of products for free! Also, it is possible to put a link from your own web site to eCrater.

A number of of the featured categories of products include art, antiques, collectibles, cameras and photo, books and magazines, computers and electronics. They also have movies, crafts, home and garden, music, sports and outdoors, toys and a baby category. eCrater doesn’t give any products to members to promote.

Other than those already listed, what are the Benefits of eCrater?

The first benefit of eCrater is very plain – its price!

Since it is a free marketplace, that automatically cuts down on fees that are incurred when you sell your products elsewhere. There is nothing worse than listing your product, have no one be interested and then you get hit with all those fees at the end anyway. That is simply so depressing when it occurs in other marketplaces and it is ultimately harmful to sellers.

How can a marketplace boom when sellers are being hit that way? Luckily, and thanks to the brainchild of Dimitri Slavov, that does not occur on eCrater since it is an excellent free marketplace that supports sellers as well as buyers.

eCrater is a free market place that goes above and beyond to help maintain their initial vision of free enterprise for everyone. That is something very rare in this money greedy world.

Due to the lack of fees, eCrater is a wonderful place for a new business owner or start up to start out. Many times, when a business is in that start up phase, there is not a great deal of extra cash. That is why eCrater is a good choice for new businesses, because they won’t get hit with fees that could take a new business under in the early stages.

As an added benefit, the online forum should be mentioned. The eCrater community has an extremely active online forum. One of the things that is done there that really seems to be a great idea is that everyone who has an eCrater store and also has a Squidoo lens is listed in one place. Hence, it is possible to view everybody’s Squidoo lenses and help promote each other.

This shows a great deal of regard for each other’s businesses and is mutually advantageous which is what is desirable in any online community, not simply selling communities. Squidoo has a very high reputation for improving everybody’s traffic and it seems an astute and mutually cooperative system to list links to all the store owner’s squidoo lenses this way.

If you have been struggling to return a good income from eBay – why not give ‘eCrater’ a test for a few weeks or so.

I get this question a lot and it has three answers: “Yes,” “no” and “maybe.” Let’s see which one applies to you.

There is no doubt that it is much harder for the individual operating out of their home to make money on eBay today than it was even a couple of years ago. When I started on eBay in 1999, eBay was a license to print money. A little guy (or gal) like your or me could sell almost anything and make money. As far as finding merchandise to sell you could source garage sales or buy surplus and overstocked products from hundreds of dealers. Today, however, many of those same dealers that use to sell to me, are now selling the same items on eBay at the same price they used to sell to me.

There are still some overstock dealers who can supply product, but they are fewer. There is also much more competition on eBay today than in past years. Today there are over 1000 large companies with employees, warehouses and sophisticated distribution systems competing for the eBay bidder. In addition to the independent large power sellers there are companies such as Disney, Lands End, Bloomingdales Department Store and many others who either list directly on eBay or have hired companies to sell their merchandise for them under another name.

Three Strategies to Make Money on eBay

So what is the little guy to do? There are three basic strategies to succeeding on eBay today. There may be more –but I know these three work, because I have done them and in fact still do them.

Make Money on eBay by Selling Used Goods

The first strategy is to sell used goods including antiques and collectibles. The market for any type of used goods on eBay will always be the purview of the smaller seller. The difficulty of sourcing merchandise makes this a difficult area for large companies. At the higher end of the used market are art, antiques, collectibles and rare books. If you have some knowledge and experience in this field, it is very easy to enter. My wife and I had a small antiques shop before we started selling on eBay, so we knew what was valuable, what the values of items were and where to find them. I can walk into any small town auction in America on any weekend and buy several items that I can turn around and sell on eBay the following week and double my money or more. In fact we still do this occasionally. About a month before I was writing this article, we attended a small town auction in Mt. Vernon, Washington. I bought a box of 1950s vintage advertising tins as a lot for $175.

I broke up the lot and sold the pieces individually on eBay over a 14-day period for over $400 total before eBay and PayPal fees. There were some other advertising pieces selling at the same auction that I did not bid on. They were very clever fakes –repros as they are known in the trade. The point of telling you this is that I could spot them but you might not be able to unless you had the knowledge and experience. The lesson here is that you don’t want to go into an area you know nothing about. But if you do have experience in any specific area of art, antiques, collectibles, stamps, coins, or rare books, then this is a perfect –and fairly easy, way to build a profitable eBay business.

You don’t have to work in antiques and collectibles. There are plenty of other used goods that sell on eBay. In my book, The Complete eBay Marketing System, I list all sorts of areas of used goods that sell on eBay. They vary from clothing to books, to small appliances, sporting goods and the list goes on. I won’t take the time to go into it here –it would make this article too long, but The Complete eBay Marketing System goes into great detail on how to select used items to sell, how and where to source them and how to sell them.

Make Money on eBay with a Niche Market

The next strategy for making money on eBay is to develop a small specialized niche market. This is in fact what most of the successful eBay sellers do. I often get emails from eBay newbies asking me where they can buy DVDs, plasma TVs, Digital Cameras, iPods and other popular consumer electronic products. I suggest you forget trying to sell any popular mass consumer product. These fields are very crowded, highly competitive and dominated by many large sellers with resources and access to sources that the average person cannot duplicate unless you have thousands or even hundreds of thousands of dollars to invest. Do you really think you can compete on eBay with Best Buy or Circuit City?

A niche is a small specialized product category that a small seller can play in. I currently sell in several niches on eBay. One product I sell is a line of high-priced wood burning firepits. I do have some competitors, but not that many and I think I do a better job of selling them. The price point of $227 is a high average selling price, so I don’t have to sell hundreds of items to make money. They are drop shipped direct from the manufacturer so I am not paying a middleman and the market for these products has been steady now for over two years. You can see my firepit auctions by clicking here. After looking at these you can link to my other auctions and see the other niche product categories we sell.

If you go to the Free Articles page on the Skip McGrath web site I have a couple of articles about niche marketing that are worth reading if this strategy interests you. In both The Complete eBay Marketing System and The Wholesale Buying System, I cover how and where to find wholesale sources for your niche products.

Make Money on eBay with Consignment Selling

The last strategy I want to point out for making money with eBay is consignment selling. I like to call this the perfect eBay business: No upfront investment in products, no inventory, high profits and minimal expenses. Once you qualify you can register as an eBay Trading Assistant and eBay will help you promote your business for free.

Once you know how to sell on eBay, it is pretty easy to find people who have goods to sell. My strategy uses low cost targeted advertising. I spend less than $40 a month and can end up some months with over $10,000 or more worth of merchandise to sell .

The trick to being successful in the eBay consignment business is in learning how to market your services, learning what type of merchandise to sell –and which to reject and how to control your fees. All of this is laid out in my best-selling book, How To Start & Run an eBay Consignment Business, published in early 2006 by McGraw Hill Publishing Co. The book includes all of the advertisements, forms, contracts and resources you need to start and run a profitable eBay consignment business.

So back to the original question: Can the little guy still make money on eBay? The answer is “yes” if you apply some of the strategies and techniques I outlined here and if you take the time to learn the skills you will need. The answer is “maybe” if you try some other techniques or just stumble around trying to learn as you go. And the answer is probably “no” if you try and compete with the big boys unless you have the financial resources and business experience to actually build a large consumer products business.

Is anyone making money selling scrapbooking items on EBAY?

I seem not to be doing so well selling scrapbooking items on EBAY. I keep my prices below everyone elses and I sell top line products. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong or is sales down for everyone that is trying to sell on EBAY?

admin answers:

The key is to sell products that cannot be bought in stores. It is hard to compete with the sales in retail stores. Good luck!

What are some tips for writing eBay ads that sell?

I never seem to have much luck in selling items on eBay, when I am putting things up for auction (not just selling them as a buy-it-now item). I always end up getting screwed over and losing money. The last time I posted an item (a brand new top-selling DVD), I made practically nothing for it. Why are others so successful? What might I be doing wrong? Can anyone help me?

admin answers:

Always put a photo on the auction. Set a reserve price to make sure you get a profit. A reserve price means that it has to sell for that price or higher. Also, be sure to charge enough for shipping, so you don’t lose there. Also, use paypal to accept payment.

In the heading be sure to put as Much as you can think of to help people find your item. Think of the words you would use to search for the item. The more people see it, the better. I would have put the brand ex: New Panasonic DVD player w/ 5 disc changer
if something is used, tell the condition.

Search similar items to see how people list them. Also, to see what they are selling for and how much people charge for shipping.

Be sure to offer a return policy where the buyer is responsible for shipping costs each way. Put a 5 day Limit on returns, too.

how best to sell jewellery on ebay?

i have LOADS of costume jewellery to sell on ebay, i used to be an avid jewellery queen but now am selling everything i can to make extra cash-whats the best way to sell jewellery? should i put it in mixed lots or sell it seperately? maybe free postage would inspire bids?does anyone have any experience selling this kind of thing?

admin answers:

I’d use “costume jewelry” in the auction title. Then I’d use an eye-catching headline.

Maybe put a few “bullet points” in to suggest possible benefits and uses. You can probably tell I know nothing about jewelry, but here goes nothing.

Ahem. For example:

From the way he treated me, I thought this costume jewelry must be the real thing!

I never thought any woman would ever mistake this pretty necklace for the real thing, much less me. But then it happened.

Let me explain. Back when I was fortunate enough to keep these beautiful specimens of rather convincing costume jewelry, it made me feel like a queen for the day. Wearing these “lucky” gems, I didn’t need the real thing at all.

And these gems may not be real, but they always make my eyes sparkle brighter. No woman would ever be fooled, but no man could ever mistake the look in my eye.

Ladies, all I can say is… in my personal experience, this necklace works. As far as I know, it makes me shine from the inside out. That’s what my new husband tells me, anyway. I’ve enjoyed these for so many years. Lord knows. I even somehow found a good, sturdy man who treats me right. Fingers crossed, ladies.

I used to feel just like a princess wearing this studded jade marvel, as long as I remembered to buff it with a soft cloth right before the big night.

Well, I’ll never part with all my favorites, or all the little memories. (I’ll never tell him about them.) But it seems a shame to horde the lot. Especially since there are so many much younger women with no lucky “heirlooms” of their own.

I wanted to share some my bountiful trove with a few lucky bidders. It’s only fair to him that I let go of the most dangerous and naughty ones. Let them go on to someone more adventurous. I only hope my good luck will rub off on you. Maybe some of the sparkle, too. If not, just send it back to me and we’ll still be friends.

Here’s a picture. It’s not very good. You’ll want to get to know the way it makes you look in the mirror before you make your final decision.

I wish you all the luck. If you ask, I’ll happily tell you the stories behind them, as long as you can keep a secret. I love to hear from others on their journey through life. Especially if they appreciate a little adventure.

I’d like to earn just enough to take my honey out for his favorite treat: a Grande Cappucino, but I’m keeping all the rest of these little dazzlers for myself. It’s okay. I still get to keep all the memories.

Since this is a “jade” necklace, please don’t wear it with tacky colors. Pick something bright and daring, especially if you’re an autumn like me.

Try to save it for special occasions like dance, the senior prom, or a friend’s wedding. Otherwise you’ll look overdressed. We don’t want that.

You can wear it to a tennis match, but only if you’re not playing, darling.

You can especially wear it to a polo match, or even the race track, as long as you intend to be noticed, but without raising too much suspicion.

Can you wear it with a pair of jeans? Tennis shoes? A t-shirt? Lying around the pool?

I’ll let you be the artist and try it the way you like best. As for myself, if I don’t have just the right accessory, I will wear it with nothing else. Which is exactly what gets me in trouble quickest.

Laura asks…

How can people afford to offer free shipping for dollar items on ebay?

Someone will sell an item of kids clothes for $0.99 on ebay with free shipping. How do they do this and make money? Wouldn’t the shipping cost more than you would get for a return? Do you just hope that the bids will cover it?

admin answers:

When a seller offers auctions starting at .99 with free shipping they are usually trying to draw people into bidding on their item. It is typically a legit item they are just wanted to make some good money off of. They do hope that the bids will cover for both the cost of the item and the shipping. Many sellers must make a risk by doing this in order to make some money. The thing with Ebay is that the higher your starting auction price is, the higher the fee they charge you. And then don’t forget all those other fees ebay and pay pal charge you!! that is why many auctions start out so cheap.

Mandy asks…

how does ebay’s free shipping work?

I have a nintendo wii I want to sell on ebay, they have a thing going on right now that every wii on ebay is free shipping. Now since free shipping is the only option to choose, do I pay the shipping fee in the end or does ebay?

admin answers:

eBay will NOT pay for anything — you pay your fees to eBay.

That means that you as the seller will pay for the shipping. So you should hope that the bid price is enough to cover the cost of the item plus shipping

Michael asks…

Is it illegal to sell a product that came free with a magazine?

Starting tomorrow the shop where I work has an offer on a magazine, where every person who purchases the magazine costing £2.00 gets a full sized bottle of Aussie 3 minute miracal conditioner for your hair. It is worth/on sale at £5.99. I want to buy 6 magazines at £2.00 each- £12 altogether and take 1 product for each magazine to sell on Ebay for a reduced price- something less than the £5.99 found in the shops. How does this work with regard to the law? Am I allowed to do this or not? Can I also sell the magzines again for a reduced price? If it is illegal to do it then please let me know and I will reconsider. However I do believe that their is a good profit to be made.
The product does not say NOT FOR RETAIL SALE, has a barcode and contains 200ml of product becuase I have now seen it and considering it is only for 1 day I don’t think anyone will mind.

admin answers:

No, it is legal for you already pay for that product when U buy your magazine, noticing that the free product may not contain the same quantity of conditioner as the original bottle even they have the same size

Mark asks…

How do people sell things with ”free shipping”?

(On ebay) I notice some people offer free shipping on all of their stuff & on the package it will say ”postage paid” how are they able to do this?

admin answers:

Some work the cost of their shipping into their asking price. Others just want to sell the stuff as quickly as possible so they take a “bite” out of their profit by paying for the shipping.
