How do I start off selling things on eBay?
I don’t mean making a listing, I mean the basic things I need to get started. Such as, do I need a PayPal account? What do I need for this account (a bank account, credit card, etc.)? How will I wire the funds from purchases to this account? Does signing up for eBay and making a listing actually require any money?

admin answers:
all your assumptions are right.
to open an ebay account is free. to start buying or selling, you need to setup a paypal account. in order to setup a paypal account, you need to attach it to a bank account or a credit card.
paypal is also like a bank so when you sell anything and buyers pay, it stays in your paypal account. you can choose to transfer those money to your bank account(which you would have already setup in paypal) this is free – takes about 5-8 days to see it in your bank account.
ebay and paypal both charges fees when you sell. ebay charges on a monthly basis and deducts it from your paypal account so have money there.
when you start listing, you are not charged anything in ebay… again charges by ebay are done monthly.
dont worry about signing up in both ebay and paypal. no payment is required to sign up in both. putting your bank account and credit card is also not required to completed your sign-up. you can enter these when you decide to start selling.

Ruth asks…
Is money left in your Paypal account from selling things on Ebay seen as income by the government?
I’ve sold a few things around the house on Ebay and I’ve just left all of my profits in my Paypal account. For tax purposes, does the government look at your Paypal account to see if you’ve had additional income?

admin answers:
It might be under the radar, if it is just a few things. If you are nervous, fill out a Sch-D–if it is stuff laying around the house, then you did not make a profit on them, and the Sch-D would report the income, no tax due.
The way tax law is written, however, Internet sales (or any sales) is reportable income. And, contrary to “popular” opinion, the IRS can and will check Paypal accounts if it thinks income is being hidden and tax is being avoided.

John asks…
Whats the best way to go about selling things on ebay?
I have racked a bill of 82.00 selling stuff on eBay. Whats the cheapest way of going about selling on eBay? Is there a trick I am missing?! lol

admin answers:
There is no trick. The only way you can save money is on listing fees (currently free to Sep 7 regardless of initial listing price) , but this is peanuts. eBay makes its money on final value fees. Your eBay bill is for the ‘cost of doing business.’ In business, there is, and always has been, a cost of doing business, whether it be in time, money or both. It is the nature of the beast, and no way around it.
Part of your ‘cost of doing business’ is to reach eBay’s potential market. And I hope you sell worldwide to maximize your profits. Try reaching 200+ million people on your own and see what your costs will be. Ebay reaches this market for you, and charges you for this ‘service’ and for putting buyers and sellers together.
Yes, Craigslist is free BUT it limits your sales to a general, geographic area. This, in turn, drastically limits your potential market. A basic business tenet is, ‘The greater the potential market, the greater the potential to maximize profits.’ This is eBAY, not Craigslist.
